The A to Z Guide to Santorini, 2017 edition

2017 AtoZ Guide to Santorini

2017 is our 7th Year as the ‘International Best Selling Travel Guide Dedicated to Santorini’!

The 2017 edition of the ‘A to Z Guide to Santorini’ is available from most major book retailers world-wide. The ‘A to Z Guide to Santorini’ was the third book in the unique ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, renowned for their comprehensive, accurate and impartial approach. Our Santorini travel guide covers all aspects of the island, its history and the many attractions to be found on Santorini. The ‘A to Z Travel Club’, hosted on this website, vastly increases the information on Santorini available to the reader. (Travel Club link)

Tony Oswin, author of the ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, is a British expatriate who now lives on the Greek island of Thassos. He realised the need for such guides during his many holidays on the Greek islands, finding it always difficult, costly and time consuming acquiring comprehensive and up to date information. He also found that the vast majority of travel guides are published and then just re-printed year after year, meaning that the information contained within, ends up inaccurate and out of date, the ‘A to Z’ series is very different:-

Firstly, our guide books are completely revised each year with all the latest news and changes on the islands for the forthcoming summer season.

Secondly, our objective is to offer our readers a unique source of the very latest news and information from the islands. To this end, purchase of any of our books grants you FREE membership of the ‘A to Z Travel Club’, allowing full access to all the Santorini web pages, where you will find the latest news on attractions, festivals, music and cultural events, travel news and a vast range of tourist related information and advice (updated every day during the summer). It also allows us to include a range of ‘member’ discounts offered by businesses on the islands, meaning that rather than costing you, our guides can actually save you money! (Travel Club discounts) .

Thirdly, most travel guides ‘pad out’ their publications with pictures of nondescript pretty alleyways and beaches that are of little help to the reader. We wanted to offer much more and at a higher quality than is possible in a ‘paper-back’ format. So to achieve this and at no extra cost to the book purchaser, we moved all the media onto this website. In the Santorini ‘Gallery’, Travel Club members will find over 70 high quality photographs, panoramas, videos and webcams. The photographs have a brief description and the relevant page number in the book, so that you can read more about the subject.

All this is aimed at offering the holidaymaker a series of unique travel guides that accurately and comprehensively cover all the subjects of interest, to help ensure a visit to the Greek islands is truly memorable and problem free.

Fully updated for the 2017 summer season!

If you need a guide, this one’s pretty good

There don’t seem to be many good guides to Santorini, and non seem to be available in downloadable form. This one’s pretty good, and the access to online updates make it better. But having been there, I’m still not sure it’s really necessary: there just isn’t that much to see that you need a guidebook for.

    A useful guide to Santorini

This is a really good little guide to Santorini. The background information on the history of the Island and its links to Atlantis are worth reading. It’s also worth going online beforehand, using the password they give you in the guide. You can download maps and a few vouchers to take with you.

Packed full of interesting historical details and up to date information. Also easy to read- I used it a lot while on holiday in Santo ring last month.

Brilliant. And Tony Oswins support web site to accompany the book is just the icing on the cake

    Useful guide

This guide is full of useful information. The only thing it lacked was pictures which I think would have made it a more colourful and interesting read.

    A to Z Guides reply:

Thank you for your very positive feedback. However, we should confirm that we moved all photographs and other media from the book to this website so as to offer our readers the highest quality and broadest choice possible. In the ‘Santorini Gallery’ and elsewhere on this site, there are over 60 High Definition photographs, panoramas and videos. We hope that you will agree that our approach is far more informative than the usual pictures of nondescript beaches and bougainvillea alleyways found in most travel guide books.

  9. Helpful and compact guide, full of information:

We found this book to be a comprehensive and well written guide to the island prior to our trip to Santorini. All bases are covered in terms of useful information, tourist hot spots, places to eat, activities and historical background. Much of the information also has a personal touch which is refreshing in a guide like this. Previous reviewers have mentioned the lack of pictures, but the author notes in the introduction that this is a sacrifice to keep the text up to date – personally we didn’t find in an issue, after all the main focus here is information not decoration. All in all a recommended guide to Santorini.

    Hi Tony

Our niece is getting married in Santorini at the beginning of July and we’re lucky enough to have been invited. We ordered your book from Amazon and today is the first day I’ve really started to read it. From what I’ve read so far I can’t wait to visit, the island sounds beautiful and so full of ancient history and beautiful villages. We love the history of places and are renting a car and tend to travel around as much as we can, we’re staying in Firostephani. We also love churches and I’m really happy a lot of your descriptions of the villages mention the churches we can visit.

Thanks for this guide book, really enjoying reading it.

    Well written text

Very interesting text but no photos.

    A to Z Guides’ reply:

Dear Gordie, first may we thank you for your review on Amazon. However, as you will find, there are over 60 high quality photographs and other media on the Santorini ‘2D Gallery’ and ‘Maps and Panoramas’ pages. We moved all media from the guide to our website so that we could offer our readers a much greater range and of much higher quality than is possible in a printed format. We hope that you agree that this offers you much more than any other travel guide.

  14. 5 Stars

a good read-looking forward to the trip.

Packed full of info, which I expected from the guide I bought last year from this series. Terrific little guide and just to the point and simple to follow. Just what you want when you are looking to be guided. Looking forward to the summer more-so now.

  16. Great travel guide

Great travel guide, seems to cover everything there is to see and do on the island and more. The travel club website is also a major bonus with a mass of extra info. Definitely recommend.

    Can’t beat it

We used this guide book last year and found it briliant, but thought we would try the Santorini Greece book, sadly it was a waste of money! We will now get this updated edition for our July holiday in the knowledge it will be up to date and we get the added bonus of the very latest information on their website.

  18. FANTASTIC thank you so much we saw so much more …

FANTASTIC thank you so much we saw so much more of this beautiful island because of this book, brilliant hints tips and info, thank you sooooo much

  19. Recommended

Excellent book with simple common sense advice and access to the website where there are loads of gallery pictures and maps.
I would be happy to recommend this to anybody travelling to Santorini.

  20. Excellent publication

This is by far the best travel guide I’ve ever bought. The author has not only provided information about attractions, towns and resorts and the food of the island, but also a comprehensive history of the island.

Be clear: the book doesn’t recommend specific restaurants etc (this depends on personal taste and experience), but the author has provided advice on how to select the best location for yourself. In addition to the book, purchase gives you access to a very regularly updated website. Tony was also extremely helpful in responding to an email query.

  21. 5 Stars

    Very informative

  22. Great guide, exceptional after sales service

Great little guide book full of useful and interesting facts. Haven’t seen anything to rival it on the high street. Unlike most guides it is not padded out with lots of photos. The web site is where you will find some beautiful pictures of the Island and so much more including the most up to date news. The after sales service is exceptional. Having bought the book I was very eager to see the website, unfortunately there was a problem accessing the full site on IPad. My email explaining the problem was answered immediately and the problem was rectified within 2 days.

  23. Contains useful information about the island going from historical chronology to …

Contains useful information about the island going from historical chronology to cultural facts.
Shame there was no restaurants and bar reviews, although as the author says every experience is different and people don’t have the same taste when it comes to food, ambiance, location… But it was something we had to look for on different websites (tripadvisor) and it turned out pretty relevant when choosing a destination to eat.
Overall good little guide. Bought a map to complete it and it allowed us to see and visit most of the island’s treasure during the week we spent in Santorini.

  24. Excellent Guide book

As first time visitors to the Greek islands and not just Santorini, My wife and I where looking for a guide book that would help us prepare for the trip, as well as provide tourist information on things to see and do on the island.

Well this guide was perfect. It gave us all the information we needed on such subjects as local transport, health, food, history, places to visit, flower and fauna, beaches as well as a simple guide to the local language.

You can buy local guides books when you get to Santorini but they don’t have a lot of information which is usable. They are more like souvenir guide books, full of pretty pictures and not a lot else.

For knowing what you will be able to see, view, eat and enjoy before your visit, this A-Z of Santorini was brilliant. Definitely worth the purchase price.

P.S. The additional information available on their website is very useful too.

  25. 5 Stars

good book plenty of interesting facts, maps and interesting places to visit

  26. Fantastic general guide to Santorini

This is a general but indispensable guide to Santorini. This guide does not compare hotels, for instance. It is an absolutely perfect guide for a general overview of Santorini and all the island has to offer. It does tell you the must see places and gives many helpful tips, as well as a wealth of other info. I found it to be wonderful in planning my trip.

  27. Excellent guide book and more!

We have purchased A to Z Guides before and found them excellent. As lovers of Greece we are visiting Santorini this summer so the A to Z Guide to Santorini was a must buy. We have not been disappointed, great little book and the website is the “icing on the cake”. Highly recommended for anyone visiting this island.

  28. Five Stars

    What a great idea.

  29. Little Gem

Excellent up to date little book, can’t wait to go and discover the beauty as described in the book

  30. Does what it says

A good introduction to the island. I reserve judgement on “an average price for a meal for two of 30€” until I have visited as I have read elsewhere that Santorini is one of the dearest Greek islands

    • Tony Oswin March 26, 2015 at 9:54 am #

      Dear Robert,

Thank you for your review. Regarding the cost of meals, in the eating out section (page 107), I confirm the average price per person is around 20€ for a meal, but do go on to say that prices are higher in the main tourist areas, such as in Fira and on the caldera edge.

I have found my reference to 30€ for two, which is in the section where I give advise on tipping. I apologise that this has not been updated, but it has now been revised.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday,

      Tony Oswin

  34. Santorini A to Z travel Guide

My husband and I have been to the stunning Greek Island of Thassos on two separate occasions. Prior to our first holiday there, as always when going somewhere new, we looked for a suitable publication, in order to get the very best from our holiday. We came across the value for money A to Z book of Thassos, which provided us will all the information we needed and I don’t think a day went by when we didn’t refer to it. We have since been back to Thassos to discover the parts we didn’t have time to see the first time around and the book was invaluable once again, although I noted, after the occasion, the publication had been further updated and extended.

On the basis of our Thassos experiences, we are now looking to explore the neighbouring island of Santorini and have just purchased from Amazon, the latest A to Z book of this island also.
The book is from the same author and yet again it demonstrates his clear passion, enthusiasm and knowledge for the Island and its history. It gives a totally open, detailed and unbiased view for the holidaymaker, although I am not so sure if I will be trying to tackle the language, using his no doubt useful glossary of Greek words!
This book is a must have in our opinion.
