The A to Z Guide to Thassos, including Kavala & Philippi, 2017 Edition

2017 AtoZ Guide toThassos

2017 is our 11th Year as the ‘International Best Selling Travel Guide to Thassos’!

The 2017 edition of the ‘A to Z Guide to Thassos, including Kavala and Philippi’ is available from most major book retailers world-wide. The ‘A to Z Guide to Thassos’ was the first book in the unique ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, renowned for their comprehensive, accurate and impartial approach.  Our Thassos travel guide covers all aspects of the island, its history and the many attractions to be found both on Thassos and the neighbouring mainland. The ‘A to Z Travel Club’, hosted on this website, vastly increases the information on Thassos available to the reader. (Travel Club link)

Tony Oswin, author of the ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, is a British expatriate who now lives on Thassos. He realised the need for such guides during his many holidays on the Greek islands, finding it always difficult, costly and time consuming acquiring comprehensive and up to date information. He also found that the vast majority of travel guides are published and then just re-printed year after year, meaning that the information contained within, ends up inaccurate and out of date, the ‘A to Z’ series is very different:-

Firstly, our guide books are completely revised each year with all the latest news and changes on the islands for the forthcoming summer season.

Secondly, our objective is to offer our readers a unique source of the very latest news and information from the islands. To this end, purchase of any of our books grants you FREE membership of the ‘A to Z Travel Club’, allowing full access to all the Thassos web pages, where you will find the latest news on attractions, festivals, music and cultural events, travel news and a vast range of tourist related information and advice (updated every day during the summer). It also allows us to include a range of ‘member’ discounts offered by businesses on the islands, meaning that rather than costing you, our guides can actually save you money!  (Travel Club discounts).

Thirdly, most travel guides ‘pad out’ their publications with pictures of nondescript pretty alleyways and beaches that are of little help to the reader. We wanted to offer much more and at a higher quality than is possible in a ‘paper-back’ format. So to achieve this and at no extra cost to the book purchaser, we moved all the media onto this website. In the Thassos ‘Galleries’, Travel Club members will find over 160 high quality 2D and unique 3D photographs, panoramas, videos and webcams. The photographs have a brief description and the relevant page number in the book, so that you can read more about the subject.

All this is aimed at offering the holidaymaker a series of unique travel guides that accurately and comprehensively cover all the subjects of interest, to help ensure a visit to the Greek islands is truly memorable and problem free.

Fully updated for the 2017 summer season!

    Visitors ‘MUST HAVE’ companion.

Strewn with gems of useful and essential information for both new and returning visitors. Obviously compiled with the intimate knowledge and love of the island. An absolute ‘must have’ companion, can’t wait to visit and sample the delights laid out so informatively.

    The definitive guide to Thassos

Excellent guide book, sympathetically written backed by in depth knowledge of the island

Great guide to a beautiful unspoilt island

A good intimate guide to the lovely island of Thassos which we visited in August. A major disappointment was our car hire from local Greek concern Potos Car Hire: old cars; ours had a driver’s seatbelt that didn’t retract; we only used them to support the local supplier(they were no cheaper) but wished we hadn’t; they also reneged on a discount offer made in Tony Oswin’s guide. Will definitely return to Thassos but perhaps not in high summer when bees are prevalent; local bee keepers clearly don’t realise that bees need water – up to a gallon a day in high summer – and thus they visit your swimming pool to get it!

    Second to none

This guide, and the others in the series, are without doubt the best guide books available for the knowledge, advice and regular updates they contain. I am particularly impressed with the website which I read regularly as it is always current and relevant to the location. In particular the coverage of the wildfires on Thassos earlier this month. There was a constant blog including photographs and video which was continuously revised and updated in accordance with ongoing events. Not a service you get with other guide books.

Everything you need to know about Thassos

Really useful book. Well written and gives good suggestions for things to do on holiday

A great book for somebody new to the island

A great book for somebody new to the island. I like the inclusion of history elements and the guidance is clear and concise.

    Very good.

    Excellent guide book

We purchased the 2015 edition as it was for a Christmas present. We chose the book for our coming holiday on the back of the 2015 edition reviews on Amazon especially that of Stuart Aken as he is apparently a professional reviewer and author.
Even though we have last year’s book we still get full access to the amazing website which combined with the book covers everything we will ever need.
We were checking details of the 2016 edition and we don’t understand the review by A. Illingworth? There are actually 13 pages on a walking tour of the main town alone with more on the other attractions on the island and those on the mainland. Obviously this gentleman is a rambler (we are not) and expects not only the guide book to cover this pastime in detail but also be responsible when a recommended rambling book is presently out of print! Regarding maps he has obviously not taken the time to view the vast amount of information on the free website including maps that are available to print off. As to his comment on tour company reps it made us smile as we have found they are usually in their early twenties and know very little. Last year when we arrived on Crete we asked where the nearest hole in the wall was and none of the reps knew!
We are looking forward to our Thassos holiday knowing that we will miss nothing of interest due to this excellent guide and so we give it 5 stars.

  9. Not really for me.

This is the first A-Z guide that I have seen. If I had seen another then I would not have bought this one. It provides a lot of information but it is the sort of information that you would expect to get from a tour company Representative. Some may say that in this respect you do not always get what you expect and to that extent this book fills a useful gap. It is also useful for those who want to travel independently.

I really look for two things:

    1. Half a dozen well described and, preferably illustrated, walks around the few most popular resorts. There are not that many, so this is an addition that should not be too onerous for the author. At first glance, there are a few lines on walks on the island and they only recommend that you buy another book. The book recommended is by the almost legendary Lance Chilton. Sadly, he is not only legendary but dead and the books are out of print. You might get a copy from Hellenic Book Service in London but even they are finding it difficult to find back copies.

    2. The second requirement is detailed descriptions, maps and diagrams to get you round the important sites in the area. This part of the book is a lot better. For a start, more pages are devoted to the important sites (pp 43-96 including important sites on the mainland) and the descriptions seem to be up to date and quite detailed. That is why I gave it 3 stars. It might have gained four, but for the dreadful illustrations and maps. I am used to DK illustrated travel guides like so many others but these illustrations are put to shame by the ever challenging diagrams in the Blue Guide to Greece. Indeed you can buy the dozen or so pages from the Blue Guide on line for about £3. The AtoZ guide seems to have thrown in the relevant illustrations and diagrams by cutting and pasting them and adding them as an appendix.

    A to Z reply

    Dear Mr.Illingworth

First may we thank you for your review. However, we wish that you had visited this website as we recommend you do, as we are sure you would have found most of what you claim is missing from our Thassos travel guide.

  10. Four Stars

Arrived in a good condition ,it,s a good guide to Thassos ,Value for money .

  11. AS, Amazon.co.uk 2015 edition review (4 Stars) September 29, 2015 at 3:57 pm #

    Good information

Very good background information on culture etc. And good tips on local places to eat. No maps in the book but you can download from site given in the book, which are not the best.

  12. Knowledgeable and useful

    Useful and helpful book.
Recommend as it is quite extensive for a first look at the island of Thassos.

  13. a must buy for Thassos

A must buy if you are going to Thassos. Information about resorts and beaches is highly accurate and invaluable.
The section for the ancient archeological site at Aliki is fantastic to guide you around.
The book also comes with a discount coupon that can be used at local tour companies and car hire which saved us a lot of money.

  14. If you are planning to visit Thassos this is the …

If you are planning to visit Thassos this is the guide for you. I purchased it a few weeks before our departure date so we could plan to visit some of the most important areas of the island. We followed the guided walks around Thassos town to take in all of the Archaeological sites, without the book I doubt that we would have found them all. The author has written guides on some of the other Greek islands if we decide to holiday on one of them I will be purchasing one of his publications to enhance our experience.

  15. A Useful Guide to This Small Island

If you want to know about the place you’re visiting for a holiday, the A-Z guides are very useful. Although in print form, they include links to online information, which is kept up-to-date on an almost daily basis. So, you buy the book and use the included password to gain access to the websites.
I’d previously used the guides for both Santorini and Rhodes. Both were excellent. This one on Thassos is also very useful. There are detailed descriptions of many of the historic sites on the island, together with guidance about how best to visit these. But there is also really useful information about local festivals, public transport, beaches, resorts, entertainment and dining on the island. The printed text, taken together with the easily accessed online content, provides the traveller with essential information to increase enjoyment.
It’s a small volume, so readily packed in hand luggage. I’ll be keeping mine handy for trips out to the various places of interest. Online, there is access to such items as detailed maps, bus timetables, ferry information, weather, and the like. So, whether you’re an independent traveller or someone taking a package holiday with a major holiday company, you’ll find much of use and interest within the pages of this book.
Although the printed book is without illustrations, to keep the price reasonable, the links to the website provide plenty of good pictures to whet your appetite and give a flavour of the resort. I happily recommend this book, and its sister publications, to all travellers who like to actually know something about the places they visit on holiday.

  16. Would highly recommend this guide

Arrived next day as promised. Would highly recommend this guide.

  17. This book is a good read and very informative

I am visiting Thassos for the first time next week.

This book is a good read and very informative.

The author, Tony Oswin has also provided a discount in selected bars, tavernas, car hire etc which will pay for the book easily.

    I recommend it!

  18. Great Little Guide Book

I think this is a great little guide – never been to Thassos before and am going there to work in April for a UK holiday company and this book has given me an insight into what the place is like plus ALOT of other helpful info – I don’t get the negative comments from some of the previous reviews on here – nothing but positives from me.

  19. Very good guide book to a beautiful Greek island

Very good guide book to a beautiful Greek island, to the adjacent city of Kavala, and to the Battle of Philippi.
Mr Tony Oswin, the author, supports his product, which is currently updated every year, by personal attendance at a stall on the quayside in Limenas town. Here you can buy all his books, and have a pleasant chat with a very nice guy.

  20. Debbie Mean, Amazon.co.uk review (5 Stars) January 20, 2015 at 8:34 am #

    Great guide book

Little bit baffled by previous review…. We have purchased this book for last 8 years. We find it so up to date as the author lives on the island and it actually feels that he is walking around with you telling you the points of interest. Can’t please everyone clearly….
Also book pays for itself… 10% discount with code in many restaurants on the island.

1 Star The only way is up.
By CorfuJohn on 7 Jan. 2015
This review is from: A to Z Guide to Thassos 2015, Including Kavala and Philippi (Paperback)
Please let this be better than the edition we bought before our trip last year. It was aimed primarily at people who had never been abroad before. It was very poorly written and with no illustrations it had the feel of a self published title not a professional book. I think you can easily find most of the information contained online. Don’t waste your money in my opinion. Does make a good door stop though. Our copy is in the hotel book swap in Limenas.

The same person left this review on the SAME book in 2011!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, By CorfuJohn on 14 Oct. 2011
This review is from: A to Z Guide to Thassos 2011, Including Kavala and Philippi (Paperback)
An excellent guide to the Island and now it comes with a discount scheme to help you get 10% of a range of products, car hire, restaurants and hotels, excellent. Well done, a terrific read and good value.

Copied directly from Amazon.co.uk (The 5 Star review above has since been deleted by CorfuJohn)

We believe the reason for his 2015 malicious review is that he would not be entitled to receive the 10% discounts on the island with his four year old edition of our guide! This is a restriction requested by the island’s businesses, not one imposed by ‘A to Z Guides’!

I enjoyed reading this book both before and during my holiday

I enjoyed reading this book both before and during my holiday. Written in a humorous and personal way made it all the more enjoyable. Thassos is a beautiful island, I will return!

A to Z Thassos Guide very useful

Very informative and useful publication some pictures would have improved it. Found it very useful in planning our holiday to Thassos

  24. Andy, Amazon.com review (5 Stars) August 8, 2014 at 6:09 am #

loads of good tips about all the different beaches

This is the latest version of the book that my fiancee and I took on holiday this year. it covers a whole range of topics from getting there, to getting round the island, loads of good tips about all the different beaches. the section on places of interest is particularly good, honest and very helpful. we took the book everywhere with us and used the walk through plans that Tony has helpfully included about sites of archaeological interest. without the book i’m sure we would have missed quite a lot of things and just ended up looking at rocks! Tony’s style of writing is clear and concise and the plans of the sites are easy to follow. you can find Tony at Thassos old town harbour and he’s very helpful and friendly.
a fabulous holiday book, and very informative. Thanks Tony, i should have got you to autograph my copy!

  25. Five Stars

Great up to date information on this superb island.

  26. The book was great

The book was great really informative and having just returned from Thassos I would recommend anyone travelling to the island would find this a great reference book.

  27. Saltsplace, Amazon.co.uk review (5 Stars) June 30, 2014 at 5:43 am #

Excellent, value for money guide book

Bought this in advance of a holiday in Thassos and found it to be a valuable, ‘tell it as it is’ guide. The discount voucher was used several times and, therefore, paid for the book!

  28. Perfect
Very pleased with the information in this book. It arrived very quickly. My only disappointment is getting the info from the newsletter which hasn’t been forthcoming.

We bought the Thasos guide this year, we on our first visit to the island in May. Must say the guide is both well written, humerous in parts, very informative and for the price an absolute bargin! The few negative reviews are rubbish & should be totally ignored.
