The A to Z Guide to Santorini, 2018 edition

2018 AtoZ Guide to Santorini

2018 is our 8th Year as the No.1 Travel Guide for tourist information!

The ‘A to Z Guide to Santorini’ was the third book in the unique ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, renowned for their comprehensive, accurate and impartial approach. Our Santorini travel guide covers all aspects of the island, its history and the many attractions to be found on Santorini. The ‘A to Z Travel Club’, hosted on this website, vastly increases the information on Santorini available to the reader. (Travel Club link)

Tony Oswin, author of the ‘A to Z’ series of travel guides, is a British expatriate who now lives on the Greek island of Thassos. He realised the need for such guides during his many holidays on the Greek islands, finding it always difficult, costly and time consuming acquiring comprehensive and up to date information. He also found that the vast majority of travel guides are published and then just re-printed year after year, meaning that the information contained within, ends up inaccurate and out of date, the ‘A to Z’ series is very different:-

Firstly, our guide books are completely revised each year with all the latest news and changes on the islands for the forthcoming summer season.

Secondly, our objective is to offer our readers a unique source of the very latest news and information from the islands. To this end, purchase of any of our books grants you FREE membership of the ‘A to Z Travel Club’, allowing full access to all the Santorini web pages, where you will find the latest news on attractions, festivals, music and cultural events, travel news and a vast range of tourist related information and advice (updated every day during the summer). It also allows us to include a range of ‘member’ discounts offered by businesses on the islands, meaning that rather than costing you, our guides can actually save you money! (Travel Club discounts) .

Thirdly, most travel guides ‘pad out’ their publications with pictures of nondescript pretty alleyways and beaches that are of little help to the reader. We wanted to offer much more and at a higher quality than is possible in a ‘paper-back’ format. So to achieve this and at no extra cost to the book purchaser, we moved all the media onto this website. In the Santorini ‘Gallery’, Travel Club members will find over 70 high quality photographs, panoramas, videos and webcams. The photographs have a brief description and the relevant page number in the book, so that you can read more about the subject.

All this is aimed at offering the holidaymaker a series of unique travel guides that accurately and comprehensively cover all the subjects of interest, to help ensure a visit to the Greek islands is truly memorable and problem free.

Fully updated for the 2018 summer season!

    Good Realistic Guide

Good guide from Santorini. I found it informative and really nice the extra info provided via web page. It has no pictures, however it actually explains the key things you must visit when travelling to the island.

    A to Z reply:

    Dear Maria,

Thank you so much for your review. To explain regarding photos, as we update and republish the books each year to keep them fully up to date, inclusion of colour photographs would substantially increase the retail cost of the book. Travel guides which do include colour photographs are invariably printed in large numbers so as to reduce the unit cost. This means that they may stay on sale for many years, leading to the information within becoming increasingly out of date.

Therefore to offer our readers the latest information on Santorini at a reasonable cost, we decided to host the island photographs on our website (, where we could not only add many more, but also of a much higher quality and include videos. The Santorini photo gallery includes 54 high quality images and 10 videos. The photographs have both a brief description and a page number in the book, where you will find further details on the image subject.

Once again, thank you for your review.

  6. Great, a valuable purchase

As a source of information this guide is comprehensive. Yet it is so much more, covering Greek food, money matters, customs, language, handling medical needs. And being a history buff I will be using the time line key dates while exploring the the archaeology of the island.
I am now considering going to Santorini without accommodation booked so that I can see what is available and be able to negotiate a good price. Thanks for that advice.
This is a very worthwhile purchase and I will keep referring to the history section.

  7. Excellent

Great book. Have referred to it a lot whilst over here

    Brilliant travel guide to Santorini

We bought the A to Z guide to Rhodes for our holiday there last year and it proved to be a brilliant travel guide. Off to Santorini this year so it was a no-brainer getting the edition for that island.
    1. The book is very comprehensive and right up to date
    2. Dozens of great quality photos on the free website….much better than the few non-descript ones in most travel guides!
    3. Numerous videos of the island on the website
    4. Discount offers on the island…..we took advantage of the Rhodes offers on meals and car hire and saved a packet
    5. Daily news on the website of upcoming events on the island. We would have missed a couple of great evenings on Rhodes without the guide
    6. All kinds of extra useful information on the website that we found very useful

    1. No detailed information on nature walks on the island…..our great love!
All in all we give the book 5 Stars.

If you need a guide, this one’s pretty good

There don’t seem to be many good guides to Santorini, and non seem to be available in downloadable form. This one’s pretty good, and the access to online updates make it better. But having been there, I’m still not sure it’s really necessary: there just isn’t that much to see that you need a guidebook for.

Excellent guide. Informative and useful with practical information as well as useful history and context.

    A useful guide to Santorini

This is a really good little guide to Santorini. The background information on the history of the Island and its links to Atlantis are worth reading. It’s also worth going online beforehand, using the password they give you in the guide. You can download maps and a few vouchers to take with you.

Packed full of interesting historical details and up to date information. Also easy to read- I used it a lot while on holiday in Santo ring last month.

  17. The one to go for

Brilliant. And Tony Oswins support web site to accompany the book is just the icing on the cake

    Useful guide

This guide is full of useful information. The only thing it lacked was pictures which I think would have made it a more colourful and interesting read.

    A to Z Guides reply:

Thank you for your very positive feedback. However, we should confirm that we moved all photographs and other media from the book to this website so as to offer our readers the highest quality and broadest choice possible. In the ‘Santorini Gallery’ and elsewhere on this site, there are over 60 High Definition photographs, panoramas and videos. We hope that you will agree that our approach is far more informative than the usual pictures of nondescript beaches and bougainvillea alleyways found in most travel guide books.

  19. Helpful and compact guide, full of information:

We found this book to be a comprehensive and well written guide to the island prior to our trip to Santorini. All bases are covered in terms of useful information, tourist hot spots, places to eat, activities and historical background. Much of the information also has a personal touch which is refreshing in a guide like this. Previous reviewers have mentioned the lack of pictures, but the author notes in the introduction that this is a sacrifice to keep the text up to date – personally we didn’t find in an issue, after all the main focus here is information not decoration. All in all a recommended guide to Santorini.

    Hi Tony

Our niece is getting married in Santorini at the beginning of July and we’re lucky enough to have been invited. We ordered your book from Amazon and today is the first day I’ve really started to read it. From what I’ve read so far I can’t wait to visit, the island sounds beautiful and so full of ancient history and beautiful villages. We love the history of places and are renting a car and tend to travel around as much as we can, we’re staying in Firostephani. We also love churches and I’m really happy a lot of your descriptions of the villages mention the churches we can visit.

Thanks for this guide book, really enjoying reading it.

    Sal and Andy Mason, Bristol
