Development and conservation work continues at the ancient theatre in Thassos Town. It is hoped that the majority of the work will at last be completed in the 2019 summer season, allowing the theatre to once again host plays and musical events.
The theatre is built into a natural bowl in the acropolis that rises above the town and has views towards the Greek mainland across the Bay of Kavala.
The earliest recorded mention of the theatre was by Hippocrates, who wrote of the existence of the theatre in the 5th century B.C.
Please note: The official sign at the bottom of the Acropolis is inaccurate. Due to the development work in the theatre, this leads you to a locked gate! Please follow the correct directions, which you will find at the bottom of page 52 in the 2019 edition of the ‘A to Z Guide to Thassos’.
